Considerations for long-term anticoagulant therapy in patients with venous thromboembolism in the novel oral anticoagulant era

BACKGROUND Patients who have had a venous thromboembolic event are generally advised to receive anticoagulant treatment for 3 months or longer to prevent a recurrent episode. Current guidelines recommend initial heparin and an oral vitamin K antagonist (VKA) for long-term anticoagulation. However, because of the well-described disadvantages of VKAs, including extensive food and drug interaction...

Shorter or longer anticoagulation to prevent recurrent venous thromboembolism: systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major disease associated with short-term and long-term morbidity and mortality. Patients with a VTE provoked by surgery or immobilisation are at low risk of recurrence and do not require long-term anticoagulation; those with a VTE and metastatic cancer are at high risk of recurrence and require lifetime thromboprophylaxis. In those at intermediate ...

The role of ximelagatran in the treatment of venous thromboembolism.

Clinical-based evidence demonstrates that long-term oral anticoagulant therapy with the vitamin K antagonists is highly effective for the secondary prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE). However, owing to fear of bleeding complications and the inconvenience of coagulation monitoring, many patients do not receive the required duration of treatment. This can lead to a high incidence of recur...

Effects of oral anticoagulation with various INR levels in deep vein thrombosis cases

AIM: In order to avoid the complications associated with thromboembolic disease, patients with this condition typically are placed on long-term anticoagulant therapy. This report compares bleeding complications in this patient population by level of achieved INR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the 6-year period between January 1997 and January 2003, 386 patients with venous thromboembolism of th...

Prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism in patients with cancer: the Saudi clinical practice guideline.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is commonly encountered in the daily clinical practice. Cancer is an important VTE risk factor. Proper thromboprophylaxis is key to prevent VTE in patients with cancer, and proper treatment is essential to reduce VTE complications and adverse events associated with the therapy. DESIGN AND SETTINGS As a result of an initiative of the Minis...
